Seed Phrase Security
The recovery phrase is the master key to every wallet it generated. This guide explains what it is, why nobody can recover it for you, and how to store it so you neither lose it nor hand it over.
What a seed phrase is
A seed phrase — recovery phrase, mnemonic — is a sequence of words that encodes the master key from which all your wallet's keys are derived. It is not a password protecting an account somewhere; it is the account.
The two ways it ends badly
Lose it and the funds are gone, with no support desk able to help. Let someone else read it and they can take everything, from anywhere, without needing your device. Both outcomes are permanent, and both follow from the same property that makes self-custody work.
Storing it
The guide covers where a phrase should and should not live — why a photo, a cloud note or an email to yourself are all the same mistake — durable physical backups, and splitting a phrase so no single location holds the whole of it.
Threats to plan for
Fire, flood and simple loss are the failure modes people underestimate; phishing that asks you to "verify" a phrase is the one that takes funds fastest. No legitimate wallet, company or support agent ever needs your seed.
How XColdPro relates to it
XColdPro generates and stores seeds under BIP39 with the phrase never leaving the air-gapped environment, and offers threshold backup through SeedVault for holders who want redundancy without extra copies.
